I have had the chance to use Nikon and Canon over the years of my photography career, Back then, I have used Nikon FM and a Canon Ftb and both are reliable and had good functions. But imo, Canon had the better lenses over the years plus Canon offers much more choices in lenses and has been the pioneer in many lens evolution such as the 5d and their IS lenses. but in all fairness, Nikon has also improved and has good quality lenses over the time.
I will definitely recommend you choose Canon

I'd go for Canon as well, I have a Canon Rebel XS 10.1 MP Digital SLR Camera and so far, Im very happy with it
here are a few of its advantage that I really like:
1. 10.1 mp with cmos sensors that captures details for poster size photos
2. 2.5 lcd display
3. a digic III image processor thats fast, and has live vew functions
4 eos integrated cleaning system that i dont need to worry whenever i have a lens change and less expense for regular professional cleaning
5 last bat not the least is its dust delete date detection that is in the software
i love my dslr

Its always been a choice between Canon and Nikon.. I personally go for Canon as well but Nikon has its goods as welll.. But with the Lens choice – Canon has it and its good to stick with one brand for your camera and lens, wouldnt you agree?
